Liu Mingkang: Cross-strait LED industry development should avoid double investment

Liu Mingkang, former chairman of the China Banking Regulatory Commission and honorary president of Lingnan College of Sun Yat-sen University, said publicly that the crisis of serious repeated investment in the LED industry is a key issue in the development of the LED industry across the Taiwan Straits.

The LED industry in Taiwan has undergone 30 years of development, and after many eliminations and integrations, the current results have been achieved after a long period of development. However, mainland LED manufacturers have not learned from their experience and lessons. Now LED lighting development has to regain the path that Taiwan LEDs have gone through, not worth the candle.

The mainland LED manufacturers are facing a fierce elimination, and LED manufacturers in Taiwan are also affected, which makes it difficult to make profits. As a result of repeated investment in the cross-strait LED industry, the profit-seekers are the European and American companies that have been well positioned in the international lighting corridor. These manufacturers have thus obtained cheaper LED chips and packages, and because of their international brand value, Terminal prices have not reflected the decline in LED components in the past two years.

Now, the mainland authorities are looking for the future to become a leader in the international market. They are faced with leading European, American, Japanese and Korean manufacturers, and they need to use the accumulated experience of Taiwan in the past 20 years or even 30 years. It is also time to turn the policy of making Taiwanese players a competitor.
